HISTORY: 'Let me tell you a story about The Boy Who Lived...'
There was one time, a long time ago, when He Who Must Not Be Named and his followers, the Death Eaters, were at their strongest. They were internationally renowned for their wickedness; how such pure young witches and wizards ended up following such a path is unknown. Perhaps they were attracted to power, perhaps they just weren't right in the head. And then Lord Voldemort heard of a prophecy; a prophecy that told of a single being with the power to destroy him. It didn't take long for the Dark Lord to find young Harry Potter, who was just a year old, for he believed that this child was whom the prophecy spoke of.
It almost seemed like a mistake. Harry Potter was from an average family living in Godric's Hollow; his father was strong young James Potter, who was an exceptional Quidditch Player, while his mother was the beautiful Lily Potter née Evans. The Potters were a very old, wealthy bloodline, so it was almost written in the stars that Harry Potter would become an extraordinary wizard. It was a dark, dangerous night when Voldemort ventured out to take care of the problem once and for all, making his way into the house without difficulty and killing the valiant James Potter with an expertly performed killing curse. Lily Potter tried desperately to protect her one-year-old son, who seemed oblivious as to what was happening, but the Dark Lord showed her no mercy.
Once she was taken care of, he turned his wand to the infant and wasted no time in performing the killing curse. What really makes this story unique and famous across the globe is this; Voldemort's curse was deflected, it rebounded upon him, and his body was destroyed, the only trace of his presence being the scar upon the young Harry Potter's head. Nobody knows what could have possible happened save for the wise old Albus Dumbledore, who informed Harry in his first year that it was his mother's loving sacrifice that saved his life.
Harry then spent ten miserable years under the foster care of the Dursley Family in Privet Drive, who were muggles to a fault; they knew of magic but made an oath to themselves that they'd stamp out that dangerous nonsense from Harry's life. It was on Harry's Eleventh birthday exactly, at one minute past twelve, that Rubius Hagrid arrived and informed him of his powerful magical heritage. It didn't take much to persuade the young lad to follow Hagrid and learn about himself, about how famous he was, and about how he would be attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Little did Harry Potter know how much troubles, dangers and excitement he would be heading for upon his first step into the magical world.
FIRST YEAR.
Upon getting his seat on the renowned Hogwarts Express, Harry met his future lifetime friends Ron Weasly and Hermione Granger. He managed to overcome his awe of the massive Hogwarts Castle once the students arrived, and was soon called up in front of the entire hall to be sorted into his house. Everyone watched with bated breath, wanting to know which house the famous Harry Potter would be in. Initially, the Sorting Hat wanted to put the boy into Slytherin, but ultimately changed its mind by Harry's insistence and courage. It didn't take long for him to fit in, immediately taking a liking to Ron Weasly and, although he didn't like the girl very well, he treated Hermione more nicely than the red head did.
His first dangerous escapade occurred on the night of Hallowe'en, when a Mountain Troll was let into their school. All of the students were ordered back to their common rooms but Harry and Ron realized that Hermione, who had taken to hiding in the girl's bathroom because of Ron's teasing, did not know of the danger she was in. They quickly rushed to the girl's bathroom and took on the troll, who eventually fell after receiving a club to the head. Harry pulled his wand his the troll's nose and wiped it off with a grimace, returning to the common room upon receiving his first house points for Gryffindor. Because Hermione lied about what had happened to keep Ron and Harry out of trouble, the three quickly became inseparable friends.
Harry discovered at his first broomstick flying lesson that he was a natural flyer. When Draco Malfoy took Neville Longbottom's Rememberall, Harry retrieved it using his broom to fly up and catch it. He was so good that he was able to join the Gryffindor Quidditch team, becoming the youngest Seeker in a century. He had inherited his father's flying skills.
Meanwhile, Lord Voldemort, long presumed dead, was secretly mounting a return. Using the new Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts, Quirinus Quirrell, as a host body, he was able to search for the Philosopher's Stone, which he believed would restore him to his body and grant him everlasting life. Voldemort was thwarted by Harry, with great help from Ron and Hermione. Overall, the events of Harry's first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry set the three students in a bond of everlasting friendship which would carry them through every obstacle that came to them from the forces of Darkness.
SECOND YEAR.
Harry's second year started out badly, and gradually got worse. Throughout the preceding summer, Harry had not been in contact with any of his friends, had heard no news from the wizarding world, and had been mistreated by his family, as usual. The evening of his twelfth birthday, Harry learned that the reason his friends had not been in contact was that a House-elf named Dobby had been stopping letters from coming to Harry. Dobby's first attempt at stopping Harry from returning had failed, so he continued trying. When Harry and the Weasleys arrived at King's Cross Station, Dobby sealed the entrance early and stopped Harry and Ron from passing through the wall to get on the Hogwarts Express. However, this did not stop Harry from returning to Hogwarts, he and Ron used the Weasleys' Flying Ford Anglia to follow the train to Hogwarts. They arrived later than they had hoped, but all in one piece; until Ron accidentally drove the flying car into the Whomping Willow and broke his wand.
During a duelling class led by Lockhart, Harry revealed himself to his fellow students and members of staff to be a Parselmouth, an uncommon skill that is normally associated with dark wizards. This bought on a great deal of trouble for Harry, since the Chamber of Secrets had been re-opened, and it was the "Heir of Slytherin" who was deemed responsible. Once the chamber had been unsealed, there were various attacks on Muggle-born pupils, including Harry's best friend Hermione Granger. These attacks were believed to have been carried out by the heir, who many believed to be Harry, but Harry believed that Draco Malfoy was responsible. In order to prove their hypothesis, Hermione cooked up a Polyjuice Potion that Harry and Ron used to change to look like Crabbe and Goyle, so they could try to get information from Malfoy. They learned that Malfoy was not the heir and that he had no idea who the attacker was. Hermione, however, did not join the boys in this adventure as she had accidentally used a cat hair in her potion, causing her to spend weeks in the hospital wing. Prior to Valentine's Day, Harry discovered a diary, and while writing in it, Harry learned that the Chamber had been opened fifty years ago and that Hagrid had been accused of the crime.
By this time, Hermione had a different theory. She believed that the monster responsible for these attacks was a basilisk and conducted research into her theory. The morning Hermione was attacked, she and Penelope Clearwater had been using a mirror to look around corners for any attacking predator. Hermione had done enough research to figure that the Basilisk had been moving around the school using the pipe system and scribbled her theory down on a scrap piece of paper torn out of a book. She was attacked the same day, and her paralyzed body was taken to the school's hospital wing. It was at this time that Harry and Ron decided that something had to be done.
They would soon learn that the person responsible for opening the Chamber was in fact Ron's younger sister Ginny Weasley, under the control of a memory of Lord Voldemort by writing into his diary, forcing her to torment and vandalize the school. They also learned that she was being kept down in the Chamber and were told that her 'skeleton would lie in the Chamber forever.'
Separated from Ron and a now deluded Lockhart, Harry ventured on alone. Harry soon found Ginny's unconscious body lying on the floor of the Chamber and was greeted by Tom Riddle, who wasted no time in setting the Basilisk upon him. Harry defeated the Basilisk with the help of Fawkes, Dumbledore's phoenix, and Godric Gryffindor's Sword. However, Harry was bitten by the Basilisk. Fawkes flew over to Harry and wept upon his wound. As Phoenix tears have healing powers, Harry survived. Harry then stabbed the diary with the Basilisk fang to rid himself of Riddle, not knowing that he had just destroyed one of Voldemort's Horcruxes. Once the emergency was over, Fawkes flew Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Lockhart to safety.
Harry realised Lucius Malfoy was the ultimate culprit for opening the Chamber. Before term started, he had planted Tom Riddle's diary in Ginny's cauldron in the hope of indirectly opening the Chamber of Secrets. Afterward, Harry was able to trick Lucius into freeing his mistreated house-elf, Dobby, who had been attempting to protect Harry all year, by giving him one of his socks.
THIRD YEAR.
Before they left for the Hogwarts Express to begin their third year, Ron's father, Mr. Weasly, told Harry not to search for Sirius Black, whom Harry learned was his godfather and father's closest friend. Finding only one open compartment, Harry and his friends shared their ride with a new professor, Remus Lupin. The train suddenly stopped well before it should have and was searched by Dementors looking for Black. Harry passed out upon the arrival of the dementors, and would continue to do so for the rest of the year until he learned how to cast a Patronus Charm.
A few weeks later, Harry played in the first Quidditch match of the year versus Hufflepuff. His Nimbus 2000 was destroyed after a run in with dementors. Knowing that he would continue to have trouble with dementors, Harry pleaded with Professor Lupin to teach him how to combat them.
Following the break, Lupin began his lessons with Harry, trying to teach him how to successfully create a Patronus. Harry did well enough in the tests, and following his last final in Divination, he received a chilling prophecy from Professor Trelawny that a servant would return and help the Dark Lord rise to power.
Ron was soon attacked by a large black dog who dragged Ron and Scabbers into a tunnel under the Willow. Harry and Hermione followed them into the tunnel, which led them to the Shrieking Shack. They used their ears to find Ron and found themselves in the Shrieking Shack- they were them ambushed by Siruis Black but were saved by Remus Lupin. However, the two adult sthen embraced like brothers and informed Harry that they were friends of his father, and that Peter Pettigrew was the reason for his parents' death. Upon realizing that Scabbers was Pettigrew, Harry preventred Lupin and Black from killing him, which ultimitely led to the man's escape.
After trying to hold Dementors off upon running after Lupin turned into a Werewolf, Harry passed out, but they were saved by a mysterious figure who cast a powerful Patronus from across the lake. Harry awoke to find himself in the infirmary and that Sirius was about to be subjected to the Dementor's Kiss. He and Mermione used her time-turned to rescue both Buckbeak and Sirius Black, and Harry realized that it had been himself who cast the powerful patronus, not his father.
Harry returned to the Privet Drive feeling as if he had accomplished nothing, but his trip and future at Hogwarts was brightened when he received a letter from Sirius. Inside there was permission for him to go to Hogsmeade, and Harry was delighted to have a godfather.
FOURTH YEAR.
In the Summer before the beginning of Harry's fourth year, he attended the Quidditch World cup with the Weasly Family, Hermione, Cedric Diggory and his father. The night after the match, while the Irish team's supporters were still celebrating, a group of black-cloaked, hooded figures held terrifying celebrations of their own by suspending the Muggle campsite manager and his family in air like twisted marionettes. On Mr. Weasley's orders, Harry fled into the woods near the campsite, along with Ron, Hermione, Fred, George, and Ginny. It wasn't long before they were separated and Harry witnesses a chilling Morsmordre incantation, watching as the Dark Mark was shot into the sky.
At the beginning of the school year, Dumbledore informed the whole school that Hogwarts would be hosting the Triwizard tournament. Witches and Wizards from Durmstrang and Beauxbatons also arrived at the school. Harry, though he did not put his name into the Goblet of Fire, was also mysteriously chosen, making it the first tournament in which there were four competitors. Harry managed to complete the three tasks of the tournament, all while attending the Yule Ball with Cho Chang and receiving hints from Cedric Diggory.
During the final event, Cedric and Harry both showed supreme sportsmanship and cooperation despite the tension brought on by the maze and agreed to touch the Triwizard Cup together so they would tie for first place. Unaware that the trophy was actually a portkey, they were transported to a the Riddel Family's final resting place in Little Hangleton, where Cedric was brutally murdered by Peter Pettigrew.
Thus began the ritual for the Dark Lord's return, in which Harry was bound to Tom Riddle's grave. His blood was shed in order to help with the resurrection of Voldemort's body. Harry and Voldemort were then locked in a vicious duel, in which Voldemort cast a killing curse. The nature of their wands' mystical connection caused their magical streams to interlock, which created an effect called Priori Incantatem. With the help of his parents, Harry managed to overcome the Dark Lord and grab Cedric's body to return to Hogwarts. He then found out that it was Barty Crouch Jr., who used a Polyjuice Potion to disguise himself as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, who put his name into the Goblet of Fire. The Ministry of Magic began to dispute Harry and Dumbledore's insistence that Voldemort had returned insisting that Dumbledore was trying to stir up trouble and that Harry was insane.
FIFTH YEAR.
Witnessing Cedric Diggory's murder was very difficult for Harry, and it was not helpful that he was forced back to 4 Privet Drive on school holidays. To make things worse than they were already, in early August, Dolores Umbridge, then Senior Under-Secretary to the Minister for Magic, sent Dementors to attack Harry in the Muggle town of Little Whinging, in an attempt to neutralize him. He was forced to perform a Patronus charm to save Dudley and himself. Subsequently, Harry was formally accused of performing under-age magic in the presence of a Muggle and was expelled, but thanks to Albus Dumbledore's intervention, it was changed to a Wizengamot hearing at the Ministry of Magic. Allowed to return to Hogwarts, Harry received a nasty surprise when the school was informed that Dolores Umbridge was to be the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.
Because Fudge stubbornly believed that Dumbledore was training an army to overthrow him, Umbridge had the Defence Against the Dark Arts class reduced to reading textbooks. Urged by Hermione, Harry secretly trained students in practical defensive magic. In an attempt to make light of the ministry's fears, the group called themselves Dumbledore's Army, or the D.A. Cho Chang became a member, and before the Christmas holidays, she and Harry kissed under the mistletoe in the Room of Requirement, though their romance suffered due to Cho's grief and confusion over Cedric Diggory's death.
What with receiving Occlumency Lessons and learning about Hagrid's Secret brother, it was surprising that Harry didn't just give up upon having a vision of his godfather, Sirius, being tortured. Backed by his friends, he made his way to London on a Thestral's back, determined to save his godfather and oblivious to the fact that it was a trick, as Hermione had warned him. They arrived in the Department of Mysteries and searched for Sirius, but were unable to find him.
A fight ensued between Harry and his friends, the Order of the Phoenix, and the Death Eaters. Harry was relieved to find that his godfather was, in fact, alright, but that feeling quickly vanished as he was pushed to his death by a curse from Bellatrix Lestrange. Though he chased after the woman, he was incapable of performing the Cruciatus curse, and watched as Dumbledore and Voldemort engaged in a duel, allowing her to escape. Harry had to suffer having his mind controlled by Voldemort, which he overcame by grieving for his uncle and thinking of his friends. As a positive, members of the Ministry saw Voldemort before he apparated away, and Harry and Dumbledore were vindicated. Serious steps were taken following this change in policy such as the sacking of Dolores Umbridge. However, this was not a sea change as the Ministry still had a mistrust of Dumbledore.
Back at Hogwarts, Dumbledore explained to Harry the real reason why Voldemort tried to kill him as an infant. A prophecy stated that he was destined to defeat the Dark Lord, for he had powers Voldemort did not: the ability to love.
SIXTH YEAR
Harry thought that witnessing Cedric's death had been bad, this year was even worse due to losing Dumbledore. His vengenance towards malfoy only grew more and he set his life to find the real horocrux and to kill the dark lord.
